OpenType, version 2002-01-10

Bonjour,

Voici une version actualisée de mon état des lieux sur les polices
OpenType : trois nouvelles références. Comme je l'indique, j'ai
particulièrement des problèmes avec mon item nº 10 : est-ce que
quelqu'un sur la liste s'y connait en polices de chez Porchez
Typofonderie ? Sinon, je leur écrirai.

Panorama de polices OpenType pour le "script" latin (présentes et à
venir)

1. Adobe (http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/C/C_60.html)
Premier fondeur de polices OpenType par le nombre : 24 polices latines
(je ne compte pas les variations de graisse et de style).

2. Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/typography/)
Windows 2000 et Windows XP contiennent chacun Palatino Linotype
(respectivement en version 1.15 et 1.40) et Sylfaen (à chaque fois en
version 1.0).
Sur Palatino Linotype, il a été beaucoup dit, mais sur Sylfaen, son
créateur, John Hudson de Tiro Typeworks, a écrit sur la liste OpenType
(http://www.microsoft.com/typography/otspec/otlist.htm) :

"If you install Georgian keyboard support in Windows 2000, the Sylfaen
font is installed, containing mxedruli Georgian characters designed by
Geraldine Wade at Microsoft. Unfortunately, the design was never
finalised due to the sudden death of the reviewer A Dumbadze, so it is
not as good as it could be. The Sylfaen font was not originally
intended for general release, but MS needed a Georgian and Armenian
font for Windows 2000 so decided to use what they had on hand. No
bold. No italic. No kerning. But it is reasonably well hinted, so if
you need a basic Georgian screenfont for e-mail, etc., it is a good
choice."

Dommage que Microsoft n'ait pas l'air d'en poursuivre le
développement. Malgré des fonctions OpenType très limitées, cette
police augurait bien... Mais voir ci-après Tiro Typeworks.

À noter que Publisher 2000 contient aussi 6 polices par FontBureau
(Agency FB, Berlin Sans FB, Californian FB, High Tower Text, Magneto,
Niagara), contenant caractères alternatifs, chiffres elzéviriens,
petites capitales, &c. mais sans les tables OpenType correspondantes.
Une tentative avortée ?

Il y a aussi eu de-ci de-là des allusions à une version OpenType de
Tahoma. La dernière illustration sur
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/developers/fdsspec/uppercase.htm
en donne un bref aperçu.

3. House Industries (http://www.houseindustries.com/)
House Industries a diffusé deux séries de polices OpenType, Las Vegas
et Simian (exemples respectifs sur
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/links/news.asp?NID=1923 et
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/links/news.asp?NID=2106).

4. H. W. Caslon & Co Ltd. (http://www.hwcaslon.com/opentype.htm)
H. W. Caslon & Co Ltd. propose des versions OpenType beta de ses
polices Caslon 1776, Caslon Text et Caslon Display. Il s'agit de
versions beta car comme l'explique Justin Howes

"we've abused the 'Old style' feature so that selecting it through
InDesign implements historically accurate long-esses, with some quite
complicated ligature tables to ensure that long esses are used at the
start and middle of words, and also before an 'f', and short esses are
used at the end of words, etc., etc."

Avec l'arrivée d'InDesign 2.0, ils sortiront peut-être une version
plus conforme au standard OpenType.

5. Tiro TypeWorks (http://www.tiro.com/)
John Hudson (le même que celui de Sylfaen) travaille activement sur
des polices OpenType comme le montre par exemple
http://www.tiro.com/transfer/sceszett.gif. Pour le gouvernement de
Nunavut, il a créé la police Pigiarniq couvrant le "Codepage 1252" et
les syllabaires Inukitut (http://www.assembly.nu.ca/fonts/). Les
fonctions ("features") OpenType ne concernent que les caractères latin
et sont déjà assez développés : "Standard Ligatures", "Oldstyle
Figures", "Small Capitals", "Kerning".

6. DTP Types Limited (http://www.dtptypes.com/)
Malcolm Wooden a donné deux aperçus de ses polices OpenType en
préparation : BerstromDT Premier
(http://www.dtptypes.com/BerstromDTSample.PDF) et DelargoDT Informal
Premier (http://www.dtptypes.com/DelargoDTInformalSample.PDF).

7. Connare.com (http://www.connare.com/)
On peut raisonnablement espérer que Vincent Connare sortira un jour sa
police Magpie (exemple sur http://www.connare.com/type.htm et
http://www.connare.com/mass.htm) et que ce sera alors au format
OpenType.

8. Apostrophic Laboratories (http://www.apostrophiclab.com/)
Cette fonderie freeware diffuse la police Mastodon en version
OpenType.

9. Tim Rolands Digital Design (http://www.timrolands.com/)
Leur site (pratiquement la page d'accueil,
http://www.timrolands.com/type/default.asp) annonce la disponibilité
prochaine de polices OpenType. Wait and see...

10. Porchez Typofonderie (http://www.porcheztypo.com/)
J'ai un problème avec PTF : pourquoi ne veulent-ils pas employer le
mot OpenType ? Résultat, je ne suis pas sûr qu'il s'agisse bien de
polices OpenType, le mot n'étant jamais employé. Toutefois, au sujet
de la police Ambroise,

"Néanmoins présentes dans les séries Alternates, les ligatures fi, fl
et ff, ffi, ffl se trouvent également dans les fontes de base, ce qui
permet leur substituion automatique dans certains logiciels de
dernière génération du type Adobe InDesign."

Sur Anisette Petite,
http://www.porcheztypo.com/Alphabets/AnisettePetite.asp indique : "ff,
ffi, ffl are available via the latest generation of software such as
InDesign."

Leur page d'accueil indique présentement :
"Le Monde Livre and Journal updated. Among minor new things, theses
(sic) new versions (LMJournal, LMLivre) feature now ff, ffi, ffl
available via the Ligature function in InDesign."

courante des polices en question :

Anisette Petite 1.0 July 2001

et précise : "Note to Porchez Typofonderie customers: Feel free to ask
a free "update by email" of most of PTF font packs you have purchased
by the past."
