Même s’il n’évoque pas directement la typographie, le terme : “segment” de texte me semble particulièrement convenir.

Comment traduire «span of text» ? J'aimerais éviter « passage » déjà pris dans un autre sens.

Par exemple dans :  «Locating the start or end of a span of text of the same attribute requires scanning backwards and forwards for the embedded delimiter or control code. »
