The Trustees issued a petition to Andy Burnham Secretary of State for
the Department of Culture Media & Sport publicised through the
19.06.08 edition of the London Review of Books.

This is the first public statement by the Type Museum for almost two
years concerning the future of the Museum and it's collections. It
reveals that there is a ... "proposed move into storage of the Type
Acrchive [sic], from its present home at the Type Museum, in Lambeth,
to aircraft hangers[sic] at Wroughton, in Wiltshire" ... and calls on
these plans to be arested and an increse in DCMS support for the Type
Museum.

The Type Museum Society will publicise this petition, but has also
launched an e-petition today at 10 Downing Street as follows.

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to stop the
proposed move into storage of the Type Archive, from its
present home at the Type Museum, London

The Type Museum has successfuly collected a large proportion of
all the definitive historical materials relating to the art,
design & manufacturing production in Britain of the typefaces
in which the world's languages are communicated and recorded.
This collection has been closed for two years and needs
re-opening to public access, educational and scholarly use –
not broken up or put into storage as is curently being
proposed. The Type Museum's collections need exhibiting,
curatorial & conservation development and educational workshops
   - not storage. This legacy is vital for the quality of
education of future generations of communicators in which
Britain has frequently led the world. We appeal for resources
to restore and safeguard educational access to these
   collections.

"Your petition has been approved by the Number 10 web team, and
is now available on the Number 10 website at the following

The Type Museum Society hopes you can support one or both of these
complementary petitions. Please spread the word and do as much as you
can to publicise these initiatives.

Time may well be short: NMSI safety experts and major project managers
were seen on site yesterday 4.07.2008.

There is of course the pre-existing online petition to the Trustees
themselves which has gathered upward of 650 signatures which you may
have already signed.

With all possible best wishes and hope for the future of type.

Apologies in advance should anyone receive multiple notifications of
these developments.
