[typo] Serif

Quelle est l'origine de ce mot ? Bigelow me donne deux sources :
1) Carter (A view of early typography, rééd. 2002, p. 48) écri(vai)t :  
The mysterious and modern word comes,I suppose, from the Dutch  
"schreef" for a scratch or flick of the pen. »
2) The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language,
Fourth Edition, Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 2000:

    "serif n. A fine line finishing off the main strokes of a letter,  
as at the top
     and bottom of  M. [Perhaps from Dutch schreef, line, from Middle  
Dutch
     screve, from scriven, to write, from Latin scribere."
Et Bigelow précise : « I believe that derivation of the English word  
from Dutch is plausible because
early English printers purchased their type from Holland, so some Dutch
terminology could have been borrowed by the English. Later, English
printers bought type from France, and borrowed the terms "roman" and
"italic" from French "romain" et "italique". »

N.B. "sans" est le mot français, couramment employé en préfixe en  
anglais à l'époque.

Rien de précis quoi ! Est-ce que quelqu'un aurait plus de précisions  
(sources, occurrences, dates,...) ?

On a employé en français les expressions "serif", "sanserif"  voire  
"sans" tout seul dans des noms de fontes depuis qu'il y en a (début  
XXe siècle ?). Mais on parlait globalement de fontes linéales.
Depuis quand emploie-t-on (à tort il est vrai) en français le mot  
"sérif" pour désigner un empattement ? J'ai envie de dire les années  
1970...
