Un ami anglosaxon s'interroge sur l'origine de notre C cédille. Je lui
ai avoué mon ignorance, mais l'un d'entre-vous a peut-être quelque
lumière à offrir sur la question.

In the newsgroup comp.fonts there has been a thread on cedilla and 

undercomma. I posted that the French "c cedilla" started as "ce", where 

the "e" was added before "a", "o", or "u" to keep the "c" sounding like 

"s", with the "e" getting smaller with time and eventually turning into 

the cedilla. I was asked for a reference, and I have none other than my 

high school French class of many years ago.


If my history is correct, could you perhaps provide a reference?
