Voici les quelques définitions que j'ai trouvé chez moi:

 

René Billoux, "Encyclopédia chronologique des arts graphiques" 1943:

ligne boîteuse: une queue d'alinéa lorsqu'à la mise en pages elle tombe en tête de page

 

Kenneison et Spilman, "Dictionary of printing, papermaking and bookbinding", 1963:

widow: a single word, in a line by itself, ending a paragraph at the top or bottom of a page.

break-line: the lasr line of a paragraph. It should not begin a new page.

 

Ken Garland, "Graphic, design and printing terms" (1980):

widow: last line of typeset paragraph consisting of one word only; may be used by some to apply specifically to one coming on the first line of a new column.

orphan: first line of paragraph appearing at foot of page; often considered undesirable.

club line: short (because indented) line at the beginning of paragraph appearing at the foot of column.

 

Selon Hugh Williamson "Methods of book design", de nombreuses éditions depuis plus de quarante ans, la mienne date de 1983. (La référence pour les book designers british - Williamson travaillait longtemps pour l'Oxford University Press):

widow: short line at head of page or column.

Le mot orphan ne figure pas dans l'index.

 

John Miles, "Design for desktop publishing", 1987.

widow: short line - the end of a paragraph - appearing at the top of a page.

Seybold and Dressler, "Publishing from the desktop", 1987:

widow: incomplete line that ends a paragraph appearing at the top of a page.

orphan: a line that begins a new paragraph at the very bottom of the page.

Geoffrey Glaister "Encyclopedia of the book", 1996 (1960)

widow line: a line of text set at the head of a page, e.g. the concluding words of a paragraph. Fewer than three lines in this position are considered bad setting.

Glaister, une référence parfois douteuse, donne "club line", comme synonyme.

 

Schuwer: 

traduit break-line par ligne boïteuse

orphan par bout de ligne

ligne creuse (en tête de paragraphe) par widow, orphan ou  turnover

ligne trop courte  par breakline

première ligne de paragraphe en bas de page par club line

En français, je trouve ni veuve, ni orphelin
