I'm starting to feel like we had this conversation 4 years ago. At one 
time didn't you
suggest editing this data directly in a dialog? That *would be very 
useful: select
some text; pop up a dialog of formatting;  edit that block; done. Very 
efficient, I like it.

The source (flavor of XML or whatever it was, I can't remember) isn't 
the point, just the simplified
penalty system. TeX gave a penalty range of +/- 1000 (?) at one time. 
The range I mentioned
was much reduced. Just a different view of the same idea.

If you have examples that you can scan and post, maybe the experts in 
this
forum can discover the secret. I don't own any examples of wonderful 
text color
in old documents with narrow columns, so I can't be of much help here.

OK, none of that anguished hand wringing so soon!   ;)
I'd rather not fall into that discussion of content vs. presentation, 
character/glyph..
I was only wondering if the zero-width justifying space, or the idea it 
presents might
be useful?
