... Je lis dans le numéro 3 de 'Druk' (de FontShop)
un article sur la lisibilité de la fonte 'Euroface' com-
portant cette phrase extraordinaire (pour moi) :

« Euroface is 42% more legible than Helvetica
at speeds higher than 80 km/h, and at 120 km/h le-
gibility reaches a value of 5 ISRU* »

... Vous avez compris que 'Euroface' est un « new
comprehensive road typeface system », recommandé 
par le « European Committee for Uniformity of
Type Design and Type Safety ».

... Ce qui m'émeut, c'est la notion de 'Type Safety',
bien sûr, mais surtout d'apprendre qu'il existe un
standard international de lisibilité ! (je suis béotien
à mort, d'accord). Je cherche donc ce qu'est ce stan-
dard de lisibilité et je lis ceci, plus loin dans ladite bro-
chure, qui me donne définitivement le vertige : 

« 5.5 ISRU is the absolute legibility world record 
measured in 1982 in simulated conditions in a research 
and test centre in Nizhniy Olenek near the Arctic Circle 
by a team of Russian typographers ».

... stupeur & tremblements ! Ceci encore :

« 'Euroface' was tested in the laboratory and on a
special test road. The team of scientists used for
the first time 'the Professor Morozov Legibility
Test Machine', providing the absolute objective
results employing the previously mentioned ISRU
system »

... re ! (est-ce un poisson d'avril ?!). Et pour terminer :

« The 'European Committee for Uniformity of
Type Design and Type Safety' decided to abolish
'Helvetica' for the 21 century as absolutely non-
functional and dangerous for the new generation.»

... Le papier (je vous passe un diagramme - pour moi
sidérant - avec unités ISRU en ordonnées, vitesse
en absisses et courbes de l'Helvetica, de l'Univers
et de l'Euroface) est signé Peter Eugene Bügleichen-
haus (peterb@xxxxxxxxxxx)

... Un autre article, signé Rüdiger Metzker, semble
remettre en cause ce qui est 'prouvé' ci-dessus :

 « (...) we might disagree with the methodology used 
by the 'Euroface' researchers.»

... Pourtant Rüdiger Metzker commence son article 
par (je ne peux m'empêcher de rire comme un bossu, 
pardon ;-) :

« Having participated, more than 25 years ago, in
the 'Effects of Ether, LSD, Alcohol and Gunfire on
Sign Recognition by Motor Vehicle Operators',  (...) 
I heartily applaud the research done by Professor
Bügleichenhaus and his group.»

... Enfin une dernière contribution par Gert Dumbar
me trouble définitivement. Elle commence par :

« I am absolutely furious and puzzled. How on earth 
it is possible that the 'European Committee for Unifor-
mity of Type Design and Type Safety' dares to come 
up with such a useless proposition ?! »

... Je glisse sur d'autres contributions (capitaliser ou
non les noms de villes) pour vous recommander ce
concentré hallucinatoire d'infos en marge de la
liste (les experts entre eux !), mais passionnant tout
de même (et gondolatoire au cube !).
