Sur la même liste de diffusion consacrée à Eudora, un contributeur 
donne une explication très typo :

Somewhat off topic, but it is actually standard practice to follow a 
period (as well as question mark and exclamation point) with two 
spaces only in text that is expected to be viewed in a monospaced 
font (e.g., Courier).  In typeset (proportional-spaced font) text, 
there is only one space after a sentence.  This has been the cause of 
innumerable search-and-replace operations for editors 'round the 
world.  :)

Quelqu'un, dans sa pratique professionnelle, a-t-il été confronté à 
ce genre de casse-tête informatico-éditorial ?
